Couldn’t agree more!
The musings of a jewelry designer
I have always been utterly fascinated by the natural awesomeness of seashells.
The plethora of species, sizes, shapes, colors, and patterns blow my mind.
I have spent hundreds of hours sustainably searching for beautiful shells (say that three times fast…)….making sure not to harm the surroundings or pick a shell that is currently inhabited.
I never feel more relaxed or inspired than when I am combing the beach for these treasures.
Here are two pieces that I created with shells that I found on excursions in Jamaica.
I have alway been a recycler/upcycler. I see beauty and potential in everything…
As a jewelry designer I especially find inspiration in old, vintage, broken jewelry.
I found a gorgeous 1980′s vintage necklace at a “junk” shop in Waterbury, CT. It was comprised of two extra-long strands of beautiful faux lucite coral beads.
I was excited by the piece because I LOVE well made faux coral. As an ocean lover I don’t like the idea of harvesting coral for consumer purposes, because of the devastating damage it has on vulnerable reef systems.
But as a designer I do recognize its superb beauty and potential in jewelry, so faux is totally the way to go!!
I have used the beads from the necklace to create rings, earrings and pendants.
I think Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to support an independent designer. When you give your loved one a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted gift it feels so much more special!! A handpicked artisinal present shows that you care enough to think outside of the box and go in search of something really unique for your sweetie.
PLUS you get to spread the loooove by supporting someone who is creating things from their heart, with their own two hands!!
Support indie designers this Valentine’s Day!!!!
